I first met Helena in Washington, DC on a book tour in 2014. She had recently published a book Gaza Writes Back and invited several of the Palestinian authors to visit the U.S.  I lived and worked in Gaza for nine months (2012-2013). Joining the book tour, I took the opportunity to introduce Refaat Alareer to Congresswoman Michelle Lujan-Grisham. My goal was to humanize Israel’s occupation for MLG. Four months later, Refaat’s brother was killed by an Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip.

An Open Letter to New Mexico Democrats:

The elected leaders of our party in the NM House of Representatives do not support an independent redistricting commission. On February 20, they voted to table HJR1 – a resolution to amend the NM Constitution to include an independent redistricting commission. As with any constitutional amendment, this would have required the approval of a majority of New Mexicans. But voters will never have an opportunity to cast a ballot for or against an independent redistricting commission because our elected leaders know best.

Dark money group spending millions to influence Hispanic
voters in New Mexico, similar states, through right-wing radio

The group Citizens For Sanity announced last month that it would begin airing millions of dollars in ads in Hispanic states to advance dangerous right-wing conspiracy theories in the run up to Congressional midterm elections in November, but they say the ads are not political because they do not invoke the name of candidates or call to vote. That, say extremism watchers, is exactly the problem.

Cause of homelessness? It’s not drugs
or mental illness, researchers say.


Lack of affordable housing is key factor,
according to study of nation’s major areas

 SAN DIEGO —Ask just about anyone for their thoughts on what causes homelessness, and you will likely hear drug addiction, mental illness, alcoholism and poverty. 

A pair of researchers, however, looked at those issues across the country and found they occur everywhere. What does vary greatly around the country, they found, was the availability of affordable housing.
