A Win and a Loss for Honest Elections
The influence of money in politics lost a little of its impetus in Tuesday night’s election with the approval of Prop 1, which gives much needed improvements to the city’s campaign finance law.
However, DEMOCRACY DOLLARS, an idea that would have provided a more just election system, giving every voter a way to feel invested in the process as well as allowing persons with modest resources an opportunity to run for office, was narrowly defeated Tuesday night. Those of us who believe that Money in Politics is destroying our Democracy could surely have done more to help pass this proposition. However, it was hardly a “dud” as blogger Joe Monahan chose to call it in his blog, and which Pete Dinelli chose to repeat in his blog. In most circles, two percentage points difference is usually considered a close race. The schadenfreude was not lost on us. With friends like Joe and Pete, who needs enemies?
