EDITORIAL COMMENT: A SAD AND SCARY WEEK MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND OUR DIRECTION AND PRIORITIES
Last Monday, March 21, Donald Trump met with the Editorial Board of the Washington Post. This is the man who could possibly be leading our country and the world next year, and yet his “dialogue” with the Board was rambling and incoherent. You can listen to the tape, or read the transcript at the Washington Post web site. Just google Washington Post Trump transcript. It will scare you. Needless to say, there will be no endorsement from them.
The next day, ISIS followers in Brussels killed over 20 people and injured several hundred more in 2 bombings. We mourn with the people of Belgium, but this, too, is scary as it has pointed up the lack of shared intelligence in Europe and between Europe and the US.
On the same day, the Melania Trump ad hit in Utah, and the rest of the week devolved down into Trump and Cruz name calling and hijacking the media to cover their mud-slinging.
There was some redemption and hope when a little sparrow alighted at Bernie’s podium in Portland on Friday, and talked to Bernie for awhile. Bernie called it a dove of peace, others said it was the “Holy Spirit” come down before Easter, and most of us felt it was indeed, a sign of some sort! And the next day Bernie won “yuge” victories in Washington, Alaska, and Montana, closing the gap some on Hillary Clinton.
And then today, Easter Sunday, another bombing in Lahore, Pakistan, killing at least 69 people at a park, mostly women and children celebrating Easter. An offshoot of the Taliban claimed responsibility.
The week has been so unsettling, to say it mildly, that you wonder if there really is any hope. If trying to get the right people elected to lead will change anything. If all this scum will just be around forever? And you want to quit. Go crawl in a cave somewhere. Start your emigration process to Iceland.
But instead, we’ve got to double down and work even harder. We must get decent, progressive Democrats elected. We must overhaul our criminal justice system. We must protect the earth, our children, and each other. We must. If we don’t….. they win.
